Collage & Beyond

Collage & Beyond

5 Day Workshop – July 2024

In Person – London, Ontario

Date: Monday, July 15th to Friday, July 19th

Time: 9 am to 3:30 pm

Description: We will work step by step through several of Cheryl’s paintings, however participants always have the freedom to follow their your own inspiration. Bring lots of references on a variety of subjects that are of interest you. Collage is only one of the techniques featured. It is an art form in its own right, or, it can become a way to understand layers in a composition – a key component in many great paintings.

Key Concepts: Students are welcome to work with subjects or pure abstract, or anywhere in between. Collage is just one the creative techniques that will be taught. Other are: palette knife, sgraffito, printing with found objects, lines in a painting, and more dynamic ways of layering. Bring your sense of adventure as we combine paint with techniques that encourage a freer expression in art.

Place: Village Green Community Church – use lower entrance (not main doors) off Village Green Ave. Our location has lots of large windows and each painter has their own large table. Please bring a plastic cloth for your table. And yes! We can leave our supplies there over night for the week.

Media: Acrylic – either fluid or heavy body acrylic are welcome. Find my list of recommended acrylic paints here. Canvasses 11″ x 14″ and 12″ x 12″ are recommended. Each day, bring at least 3 canvasses – some processes need drying time and you want to be able to keep painting. Please do not bring canvasses larger than 16″ x 20″ to class. Optional: you may also want some scrap watercolour paper to try techniques on.

Supplies: As well as paint, you will need some heavy (or extra heavy) acrylic clear gel medium – matte or satin finish. Golden or Liquitex brands are recommended. A gloss (if you like to collage shiny objects) and a matte varnish from Liquitex are also recommended. Magazines to cut up, metallic wrapping paper, scraps of fabric, buttons or other old jewelry findings – whatever your imagination says might be fun to collage with. Also bring a palette knife – or an old credit card cut diagonally.

Notes: Bring a bag lunch or plan to go to a nearby restaurant for lunch. Coffee, tea, and water are supplied, please bring your own cup.
