Van Gogh – Up Close!

Just back from a wonderful 1 week holiday in Ottawa! Spent time at the National Gallery and at the special exhibit “Van Gogh: Up close”. There are over 40 van Gogh paintings plus some of his drawings! My favourite was “View of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer” with lavender fields in the foreground and town with castle in the distance. It was also wonderful to see the famous “Almond Blossom” up close, and I was quite taken by a painting called “Wheat Fields with Sheaves” that I had not seen before in any of my books. The tree trunks in “The Large Plane Trees” were stunning. Although there were a number of his lesser works that were not quite as interesting, there were more than enough fantastic paintings to make this trip worthwhile. Here’s the link to information about the show at the National Gallery in case you have the chance to go van Gogh!

Edward Betts

“Ice Falls” by Edward H. Betts Here’s a link to some info and art of one of my favourite artists – “Edward H. Betts – (1920-2008)” His work is quite abstract, yet often hints at landscape. As you will see from the art on the linked page, he gets away with amazingly wild colour use. Betts worked in both watercolour and acrylic paint. His book “Masterclass in Watermedia” is a classic that was one of my earliest inspirations as a beginning artist. I still love his work today!

Just had to say…

I have the most wonderful art students – and I have some numbers to prove it. At the recent art show in Grand Bend, 14 artists who had paintings there are or have been students of mine. That added up to 27 of the paintings in the show. And, in the current art show at the Aeolian Hall in London, of the 9 artists showing, 5 are my art students, plus myself – makes 6! You can arrange to see the current Aeolian Art Show by phoning the Hall at 519-672-7950 weekdays between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Or why not take in a concert and enjoy the art too? Here’s the “Aeolian Website“. (Find link on my homepage blog if reading this in Facebook or elsewhere.) – I’m so happy to see my students doing so well – paint on!
